Revisiting The Landscape Of Pre-Modern Vietnamese Science

A Brief History of Pre-Modern Vietnamese Science and Technology (Lược sử khoa học và kĩ thuật Việt Nam tiền hiện đại) is a scholarly work compiled by researchers Trần Trọng Dương, Phạm Vũ Lộc, and Nguyễn Ngọc Phương Đông, published in 2026 by Vietnam National University of Education Publishing House in collaboration with Omega Plus Books.

The book offers a comprehensive overview of the formation and development of Vietnamese science and technology during the pre-modern period, highlighting the creativity, adaptability, and capacity for knowledge transmission and transformation that characterized Vietnamese society throughout history. More than simply reconsidering the place of science and technology in Vietnamese history, the work also reevaluates indigenous systems of knowledge that have often been overlooked in modern historical narratives.

Through its examination of fields such as astronomy, calendrical systems, geography and cartography, mathematics, hydraulic engineering, mechanics, weaponry, transportation, and architecture, the book demonstrates that from an early period, the Vietnamese had actively absorbed, adapted, and innovated systems of knowledge in order to respond to environmental conditions, defend the country, and organize social life. The study also analyzes processes of cultural exchange and intellectual interaction between Vietnam, East Asia, and the wider world, thereby affirming the long-standing traditions of creative labor, intellectual curiosity, and innovation among Vietnam’s diverse communities.

Developed through an interdisciplinary approach and grounded in extensive historical sources as well as contemporary scholarship, A Brief History of Pre-Modern Vietnamese Science and Technology serves not only as a valuable reference for readers interested in the history of science, intellectual history, and Vietnamese civilization, but also opens up the possibility of developing a broader future project on the “History of Vietnamese Civilization, Science, and Technology.”
